My little cousin just had his first birthday. Since he lives in a city that is sometimes foggy and cool, I decided to whip up a quick square hat for him.
I used some sport-weight wool I had lying around in teal and white. I made up the following pattern on the fly but I think it looks pretty cute on him!
In first color, cast on 60
Join in the round, place st marker at beginning of round
Round 1: Knit all stitches
Round 2: Purl 1 round
Round 3: Knit 1 round
Round 4: Purl 1 round
Round 5: *k6, m1; repeat from * until end of round (70 stitches total)
Round 6: Purl 1 round
Switch to contrasting color at start of next round
Round 7: Knit 1 round
Round 8: Purl 1 round
Round 9: Knit 1 round
Round 10: Purl 1 round
Round 11: *k7, m1; repeat from * until end of round (80 stitches total)
Rounds 12-14: Knit 3 rounds
Rounds 15-20: Purl 1 round, knit 1 round, alternate purling and knitting rounds for 4 more rounds
Repeat rounds 12-20 above 4 more times
Remove marker and bind off
Use mattress stitch to seam the top of the hat together
Weave in ends
